GENERAL
Mineral Primer is a low odor, zero VOC lime based primer specifically designed as a preliminary binder coat before lime based plasters and lime paints for both interiors and exteriors. It can be applied on new drywall, water based paint, cement and more. For walls and ceilings only. Not suitable for waterproofing or stain-blocking.
COVERAGE
5 gallons: 1,000-1,200 square feet per one coat
1 gallon: 200-240 square feet per one coat
1 quart: 50-60 square feet per one coat
SUITABLE APPLICABLE SURFACES
New or previously painted drywall, composition board, concrete, plaster and other porous surfaces. Apply Mineral Primer over substrates that are clean, cohesive and free of contamination. Surfaces to be painted must be clean, dry, and free of dirt, dust, grease, oil, soap, wax, scaling paint, water soluble materials and mildew. Remove any peeling or scaling paint and sand these areas to feather edges smooth with adjacent surfaces. Glossy areas should be dulled. Drywall surfaces must be free of sanding dust. New plaster or masonry surfaces must be allowed to cure (30 days) before applying Mineral Primer. Cured plaster should be hard, have a slight sheen and maximum pH of 12; soft, porous or powdery plaster indicates improper cure. Never sand a plaster surface; knife off any protrusions and prime plaster before and after applying patching compound. Poured or pre-cast concrete with a very smooth surface should be etched or abraded to promote adhesion, after removing all form release agents and curing compounds. Remove any powder or loose particles before priming.
Gypsum Drywall: Drywall should be taped and smoothed to a level 4 or higher finish in accordance with Gypsum Association’s GA-214.
Existing painted substrates: Will adhere to existing painted surfaces as long as they are latex or acrylic. If oil paint, primer the surface with appropriate water based primer, and then use the Mineral Primer.
Existing texture: Mineral Primer can be applied in a thick manner to hide most light textures. Minor cracking might occur from excessive thickness, which is acceptable as long as there’s no delamination or peeling.
Exteriors: Primer can be used on exterior surfaces with existing cement or lime based stucco, as well as cement and painted surfaces.
Areas not recommended for Mineral Primer: Floors and counter tops. Not for waterproofing or stain blocking.
APPLICATION - WATCH OUR INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEOS ON VASARIPLASTER.COM
Preparatory work: Mask and protect adjacent surfaces and remove any dust from surface, especially after sanding. Mask about .5-1.5 mm from adjacent surface or trim to allow for thickness of Vasari plaster or Lime Paint. Protect surrounding surfaces with appropriate protection.
Mineral Primer can be brushed, rolled or sprayed with the following tools:
Brush: With a nylon, polyester or animal hair brush.
Roller: ¼ to ½ inch roller nap.
Spray: Airless pressure: 1500 - 2500 psi Tip: 0.21 orifice (EXAMPLE: 621 tip)
THOROUGHLY AND EVENLY COVER ENTIRE SURFACE.. Lack of complete coverage can cause delamination or discoloration on finish coats.
Mineral Primer is thicker than most primers. It can be applied in a standard paint thickness or applied in a heavier, thicker fashion to hide textural imperfections or to create subtle texture.
Recommended Film Thickness – Wet 4.0-7.0 mils – Dry 2.5-4.5 mils
Dry Time @ 77 °F (25 °C) @ 50% RH – To Touch 24 hours – To re-coat 24 hours if necessary,
Dries by evaporation, coalescence.
Never add other paints or solvents.
CLEAN UP
Wash painting tools with water immediately after use. Spray equipment should be given a final rinse with mineral spirits to prevent rusting. Mineral Primer can usually be removed from unintended surfaces with water.
SHELF LIFE AND STORAGE
Do not store in direct sunlight and protect from extreme heat and cold. Store Vasari Mineral Primer in a cool, dry place. When properly stored, Vasari Primer shelf life is 5 years from purchase date.
